Peyto Lake Engagement – Banff Photography

I have been wanting to visit and shoot at Peyto Lake forever! When Britt asked if I had any suggestions for her engagement session I was thrilled! We originally were going to shoot at another waterfall in Nordegg, then Rob broke some bones. And the hike into the waterfall was no longer a good idea! So we rescheduled and went for Peyto instead! It was stunnnnnnning. I cannot wait to go back in the summer and see it in a different way. Britt and Rob literally turned into human popsicles for this shoot. They braved the winter elements and the result was just stunning! I am so excited to capture their big day next year. I shot Brittaney’s cousins wedding in 2015 and I am so excited she asked me to capture her big day as well!

Whats in my bag? Photography Gear list

Okay so this is a question I get asked ALL the time! So I figured I would make a photography gear list blog post so people can easily reference it! Whether you are a beginner photographer or you are just curious what other photographers carry with them! These items are all in my Kamrette bag! Which by the way I want to buy in every colour! Obviously you can buy your gear from wherever you want! I am a huge amazon fan, because of amazon prime and I love shopping from my couch!

I have the money-maker holdfast dual strap for my cameras! Which is a pricey one for sure! I later found out about this shop on Etsy which is half the price! I ordered one from them in a different colour and the quality is so good!

Start off with the obvious! My photography gear is all Canon! I shoot with the 5D Mark 3 and now its discontinued I am the saddest peach. My back up camera is the Canon 6D Mark 2, it’s a FABulous camera and I have zero complaints there. Ideally I wanted two Mark3’s so they were identical but I couldn’t get one before they stopped selling them! One day I’ll upgrade to the Mark4 but I just can’t justify it yet when both my cameras are in mint condition! I would highly recommend this camera to someone who is starting out and doesn’t want to take the $4000 plunge of the Mark 4 yet! I probably have 7 batteries for my cameras, and realistically only drain 2 per camera, but I always like to have extra for weddings! If you are using flash or extra monitors then you drain faster for sure.

Then before jumping into lenses these bad boys are the main event! I always always have multiple cards on me, in my bag! I shoot on two cards in my 5D and I NEVER clear both cards until that session / wedding has been returned! .

When I get home I upload to my hard drive! Then I back it up to a second hard drive. Then I store the SD card in a case with the clients name on it, and clear the CF card so its ready for the next wedding!

Which takes me to hard drives! Since I travel a lot I always have a hard drive on me, and a back up at home! I never take my backup out of the house. I recently got the Lacie Rugged hard drive and I love it! I have a 4TB one and so far its been a good size for the whole year! The black case below is for my other hard drive (backup one)

Lenses

These two babies are my life! I always have my 35 on one camera and my 85 on the other. I could shoot a whole wedding with a 35 but it’s definitely nice to have something a little closer to get guest reactions without being in their face! I don’t like to sit at the very front of the aisle during ceremony either, so my 85 comes in handy here!

Then for ring shots I use these macro filters, they are the best. If you don’t have them yet definitely order some. Just check the thread size these ones specifically are for a 35 mm lens.

Next on my list of purchases for lenses would be this bad boy! Obviously there is the canon version as well, but for more than half the cost I have been leaning towards sigma lenses right now.

Lights

I use this video light for both video as well as photography! It’s a little bright to always have on, but if I am having issues focusing in the dark with flash I will use the video light instead! Or for sparkler exits because I find flashes don’t recycle fast enough. And if you buy it don’t make the mistake I did, the batteries and charger are sold separate!

Those are the two flashes I carry! I use the 600 on camera for receptions! And then if I am off camera flash I’ll use the 430 on camera and have the 600 on a light stand or the little free-standing mount. Its more powerful for the back lighting.

Rechargeable batteries! Do your self a favour and make the switch!

Fun Tips and Tricks

Okay these guys are always super fun for getting creative and being a little different! The first link is the bigger one of the two, which I prefer! Click here too see the prism in use.

Videography Equipment

If you have been following my business for a while you’ll know I am new to the wonderful world of videography! So my gear is pretty basic right now, and it works great for me! I personally love the Panasonic for video! You can also get mounts so you can use your Canon lenses with the Panasonic body! I am just using the kit lens right now, next year ill upgrade and get a few more Panasonic lenses!

Then for the drone, I use for both photo and video! I just love the different perspective it adds to the gallery or highlight film! It’s so small it fits right into my bag with all my other gear. The drone battery doesn’t last that long! I have contemplated buying a back up battery for trips or when I can not always charge it mid day!

As I added this all up I died a little inside at how much money I have spent on gear and I am not even DONE my wish list of items! Hope this was helpful, if you still need some pointers or guidance feel free to check out our workshops & mentorships!

Then of course I always have snacks and lipstick in my bag but you probably don’t care about those! Or maybe you do haha incase you are a lipstick addict like me! Then check these out, my GO TOS.

Jacquie was a bride of mine and she has a line of cruelty free, paraben free, vegan makeup, all made in Canada!

Classic favourites would be Mac and Makeup forever for lipstick, but sadly they both test on animals. I am trying to transition out of those ones!

Edmonton Family Photographer – The Hellewell’s

Its always a pleasure seeing this family! We had quite the time in Calgary trying to find somewhere to shoot! We originally wanted a pumpkin patch but they are hard to come by in Calgary we learned! The first one we went too, wasn’t even a pumpkin patch and it was so busy it would have been impossible to shoot! So we googled, and wandered on. Finding farms that were closed, and no pumpkins. So we stopped at this little beachy looking spot! It turned out to be perfect. Thanks Sam and Blake for making the trip for your photos <3
